Author: Ellen Raskin
Page length: 185 pages
Reading Level: 3rd Grade through 5th grade
Plot: With the legend of the millionair Samuel Westing disappearing soon told on Halloween night and 16 strange people moving into an appartment, only the worst can happen- welcome, Lets play the Westing Game. As Barney Northrup, Sandy McSouthers, and Samuel Westing are discovered to have strangely similar features and a 13 year old girl named Turtle ventures into a haunted house, a mystery unfolds.
Otis Amber, Berthe Erica Crow, The Wexler family (includes Turtle) , the Theodarakis family, the Hoo family, Judge Ford, and more unique characters all live in the same appartment and are sent to the mysterious and strange will of Mr. Westing (for they are all heirs) called “The Westing Game”. The game is started with all the heirs paired into groups of two and given letters that form the name of the murderer that Mr. Westing says took his life away from him in some strange poetic way. One person out of the 16 is a bomber, another a bookie, and another the murderer of the patriotic Sam Westing. Who is the murder? And the award to cast out the evil one—– 20 million dollars.
In-
the characters, like Watership Down are very unique: Sydelle Pulaski fakes bone disease for attention; Turtle Wexler will kick you in the shin for pulling her braids; The genius, Chris Theodorakis, has a crippeling disease where his form of speech and his legs are both damaged; Otis Amber the 62-year-old delivery boy; Berthe Erica Crow the religous womans dressing in complete black thinking everyone is going to hell-in-a-hand basket, and more unique characters.
Out-
This book was kind of short, I read it in three days.
In-
This is the most un-predictably (kind of violent) mysterious book, the mystery has you keep reading, even if you don’t even like the book, it still keeps you going.
In-
Following the pairs of unique characters with their strange clues is fun, and to see what characters are normal— and what are—strange.
In-
Finding out who everybody is— is very— surprising to mysteries, the murder’s not the obvious, and is not the not so obvious, either.
And Last-
In all I give this book four and a half stars. Of course all the things are in up there, those are the basic best parts of this book, plus it’s so gripping you must read on! The only reason I take off half of one is because of how short it is, yet that would have taken off one star, since the font size is so little, it was still big. Just read this book to find out how good it is, I can’t explain it’s amazingnes! Here are the book covers I can find:
